dreams

By John Carley

light as the dreams   of an innocent child
    the hawthorn petals   drift

        across the lilac   yellow seas
of flowering grass   and summer breeze

light as the dreams   of an innocent child
  the hawthorn petals   drift

up Cribden Hill   and down the lane
to the top of the paddock   and back again

light as the dreams   of an innocent child
  the hawthorn petals   drift

                              drift   my child
                              drift   my child
   the hawthorn petals   drift

for soon the berries   start to swell
the year must turn   but all is well

light as the dreams   of an innocent child
          the hawthorn petals   drift
