Transparent Words - Poetry

Lilith, First Wife, Last Wife
by Gary Blankenship

girl baby -
swollen belly
empty chest
days in the same soiled rag
cries -
she touches a lip
silence

teen -
blood runs down her leg
mouth smashed
nose broken
moans -
she touches a leg
their laughter fades

Along the horizon, she moves
to protect her’s, broken, sick,
maltreated from the Sons of Noah.
While others strive to harvest souls,
from pole to pole, she travels
to release the lost, offered
innocent before the Throne of God.

matriarch -
tubed
strapped
forgotten
labored breath -
she touches gray hair
flatline

touch
latex tears

touch
eggs dry

touch

Since the holy annulment as God’s wife,
she has wandered His earth
to protect the Daughters of Lot.
Without acknowledgement,
as God creates cruel signs of his love,
she removes as many as she can -
not enough, never enough, to allow her
to stand innocent before the Throne.

made demon
by the mind of men

made goddess
by the power of women

the touch
to release pain
to ensure this one is born
this one not
for her daughters
their mothers

from the headwaters of the Pison
to tidal flats of the Mississippi

she kept the covenant
though he did not

And the son of Cain’s son’s son was Jubal;
and Jubal’s sons made the music and song,
and the music glorifies and nourishes God,
though the wife and mother of all the bards
is forbidden to join her charges before the Throne
.
one touch saved
