Born in May 1956, Richard Smith graduated with a degree in Applied Sociology in July 1979. After several years working in Market Research he established a career in private tuition and Further Education lecturing teaching in the areas of Business Studies, English, History and Social Science. Although he had dabbled in poetry since his late teens, he only discovered that he had a skill in that direction at the age of forty-seven following positive feedback from his students.

He lives in Leeds with his wife and two of his three sons. His interests include family history and looking after two cats who often inspire the muse in him.
