Heard the latest in the newsagents
Everyone was talking

"came in their thousands" I heard someone say
"did you see them? a man  asked

at work, in town, people commented
half listening, half drifting

I  picked up on the buzz
got carried along with it

wanted to know more
until I heard of someone being badly bitten

by millions of frantic midges
having their last fling

before autumn sets in
