Transparent Words - Poetry

Books Cannot Trick You
by Jessy Randall

Books cannot trick you --
you cannot avoid the physical
fact of them. You know
at all times when the story
will end. In your hands
you feel the heaviness of the book
on the right or left side; you know
that you are halfway there, or just
beginning, or two pages
from the final conclusion. And if,
at that point, you are not almost satisfied,
you will not be. Two pages
are not enough to bring the hero
all the way home. He will be
on the train perhaps, or
in the station, but at that
last moment you see him,
you will not understand.
It is not like reality,
where things can surprise you
by suddenly ending.
