- Wedding Vows For Ferns
Sledgehammers were waiting
to take the body while hope
was on vacation at the beach.
The structure was old and caving in –
sagging wood, chipped brick. Too
many neglected mortgage payments.
Too many discarded nails, scraps.
The ferns stood in salute -- at perfect
attention while the statutes stood on
either side discussing porcupines and
commitment - exchanging vows with
florists while the guests applauded and
sweated through the tangle of sunshine,
and the odor of wet tainted feet.
