Each day we venture out, follow the black
stream under tart-green oaks, as the water
runs, cold as grief, in lithe
curves from weir to weir.
We look up, listening
to the woodland sigh like the sea,
search for hope in the empty sky. A young man
waits, watches his child chase
shadow-dapples along the earthy bank, while her
foal-legged sister tangles
starry
ramsoms in her hair.
We pause, approach slowly.
Their father makes space for us to pass,
we share a greeting with a smile. |
