Aidan Smith

Norwich, England

I’m lucky enough to live in the fine city of Norwich, where I work as an electrical engineer. Thankfully, being furloughed has given me the opportunity to write even more than I usually do. Some of my inspirations are people such as, Christina Rossetti, Kahlil Gibran, and George Herbert, among others.

Poem written 20th April 2020

The Danse Macabre

Sometimes you dance to a quicker beat,

Gyrating in an ever-expanding circle

To an epitaphic song who’s

Melody is innate but jarring to all.

You approach a little too close,

Then fall away in faux pirouette,

Though quickly return in your vice-like grip.

The more we try to fight your phantom hold

You tighten like a Chinese finger trap.

You grab us by the hands, as if in some

Romantic dream, and spin us around in

The wheel of life ‘til we’re too dizzy to leave.

We all sway to your soothing tune of darkness,

And none escape the dance of the Danse Macabre
