Poetry Critique Service

Professional feedback designed to help you strengthen your poetry and develop as a writer.

The Poetry Critique Service offers poets the opportunity to receive detailed, constructive feedback on their work from experienced poet and editor Jim Bennett.

Whether you are preparing poems for publication, developing a collection, or simply looking for informed guidance on your writing, this service provides an objective and supportive assessment of your work together with practical suggestions for improvement.

About the Service

The service covers the critique of up to 10 individual poems, with a maximum total length of 450 lines of poetry.

Poets may submit ten separate poems, or fewer longer works, provided the total submission does not exceed the 450-line limit.

The emphasis is on helping writers understand the strengths of their work while identifying areas that may benefit from further development. Feedback is constructive, thoughtful, and tailored to the individual poet and the poems submitted.

How It Works

To ensure each poem receives careful attention, submissions are sent in stages.

Step 1

Send your first two poems for review.

Step 2

The poems will be read and considered. Where appropriate, Jim Bennett may contact you with questions or observations before preparing the full critique.

Step 3

A detailed critique is prepared and returned, usually within three days (excluding weekends).

Step 4

Once you have received feedback on the first two poems, you may submit the next two poems for critique.

This process continues until all poems included in your submission have been reviewed.

What You Will Receive

The critique may include:

Analysis of strengths and weaknesses

Comments on language and imagery

Observations on structure and form

Suggestions for revision and development

Guidance on clarity and effectiveness

Advice on improving impact and engagement

The aim is not simply to assess the poems, but to help the poet develop a deeper understanding of their own writing.

Discussion and Follow-Up

Poets are encouraged to comment on the feedback they receive and to ask questions about any aspect of the critique.

Where appropriate, Jim Bennett will respond to queries and provide clarification or additional guidance.

This dialogue is often one of the most valuable parts of the process, helping poets gain a clearer understanding of both the critique and their own work.
